“Colorado is always beautiful, but in fall there is a soft loveliness as the riot of gold and yellow changes to deep greys and clear whites.
The aspens are a particular feature of Colorado, marking the seasons with their colour and in just such a country as the gold miners of '58 delved, fought and froze.
"The tones of Autumn covered the hillsides, and along the route, which is roughly the old Spanish trail to Sante Fe, the whole of Colorado seemed a blaze of gold and russet. Up over the Continental Divide the hunters were coming by the thousands. I don't know about the deer, but seven hunters died on opening day, including one who hid behind a bush and made animal noises as a joke on his friends. All three shot him."
