“Whenever I go to Christchurch I walk by the Avon to put myself in the mood for the place. The river is quiet and peaceful and very lovely with its weeping willows and its bridges. But it is the Square with its Gothic cathedral and its trees, especially in winter when they are bare , that so well denote the English origins of the city. There, too, among the trees around on his pedestal stands John Godley who brought those "first four ships", and not even the pigeon (or was it a seagull?) perched on his head could detract from his stately English demeanour. I sketched until dusk unhurries, because in Christchurch at that hour there simply isn't anything to do.”
