“On the road south to Auckland we often stopped to note the light on this familiar scene. It had become a friend and we, my wife and I, could not go south without seeing it. Puhoi means ‘slow’, and slowly flows the Puhoi to the sea. There is a sleepy place not far up the river, also called Puhoi, where a colony of Bohemians settled in 1862. They, and Puhoi, have remained quaintly old world and quiet amid the gaiety of this playground.”
